#RE2PECT

(Photo/Courtesy of people.com)

I'm a life-long Red Sox fan but, also, I'm the wife
Of a life-long Yankees fan which, sometimes, leads to strife.
When it comes to Derek Jeter, though, we both agree
He's one of the better players we will ever see.

Back when SNL was funny Jeter was the host;
Did a sketch on Weekend Update and he didn't boast
When he pointed out his stats and said he didn't suck
But that Red Sox fans who wanted him were out of luck.

That's when my RE2PECT for him began; it's only grown.
When my husband tipped his baseball cap, I tipped my own.
'though The Captain plays for my arch rivals, even so;
I'll miss Derek Jeter and am sad to see him go.

We'll Overlook It This Time.

Saw a recent article that took me by surprise.
When I read the title I could not believe my eyes.
It was called "F@&% Boston" and, if you click on this link,
Comments show that sentiment's more common than you'd think.

Vitriol and anger were directed at my state.
People made a list of things about us that they hate.
Number 1, it seemed to me, is that we - mostly - win
And, it's true, that Boston fans have ample cause to grin.

We parade in duck boats through the streets so often now
We've incited jealousy from other states...  And how!
We have got it even worse than Yankees' fans have had;
All four major sports-teams and not one of ours is bad.

Red Sox are World Champions; the Patriots just won
And, although I know that hockey season's just begun,
Boston's Bruins also look like they'll be doing well
Giving those who hate our city one more reason...  Swell.

Basketball might save us; let Miami take the heat.
Still, another Super Bowl for Brady would be sweet.
From our vantage in this "shining city on a hill"

Boston Red Sox - The Best Worst Team

Red Sox are 2.5 games ahead in the A.L. East. (Photo/sports.yahoo.com)

Give the team a year or two, the Red Sox owners pled.
Boston is rebuilding, all the sports announcers said.
Do not be surprised if they should finish tied for last.
No one thought John Farrell could turn things around so fast.

Now it's almost Labor Day and, in the A.L. East,
Boston's Red Sox hold the lead...  They're up 2 games (at least.)
Last night, Dirty Water filled the seats at Fenway Park.
Expectations for the team already passed the mark.

Thank Shane Victorino, thank Pedroia and Ortiz,
Not forgetting Napoli and Lackey, if you please.
And, let's thank the sports gods...  Cover all our bases, 'cause
As of now, the Red Sox are the best worst team there was.

The 1st Commandment - Thou Shalt Not Taunt

The Ancient Greeks knew about the sports gods. (Photo/FactsandDetails.com)

Lately, Boston sports fans are more fortunate than most.
I'd thank God and Jesus and, of course, the Holy Ghost
If I thought they'd intervened, but I don't think they did.
They've got more important things to occupy them, kid.

That is not to say I don't believe in lesser gods
(Even though that classifies me with the ditzy broads.)
Hovering above the ice; they're, mostly, near the net.
Laughing up their togas at the phrase "It's a sure bet!"

Sports gods are the reason hockey pucks bang off the post.
If a sports fan angers them, their favorite team is toast.
Sports gods don't like taunting or predictions that you'll win,
Therefore, I'm determined to avoid committing sin.

I'm allowed to say the Boston Red Sox have been great
Just as long as I don't tease my Yankees' loving mate.
Sports gods will not mind it if I wish the Bruins luck,
I'm just not supposed to say Chicago's Blackhawks suck.
 So, I'll mind my Ps and Qs in tribute to the s.
When I pray for victories I will remember "Please."
Just in case I'm right and lesser sports gods do exist
Thank you for our blessings; far too numerous to list.

Pity the Boston Sports Fan

https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQWu8bEsEkfjtT10Is3H85niYygeW2zHI4SzzYOVS2Z034tfwVvwA

Boston sports fans haven't had a lot of things to cheer;
Just a week and all our hopes for glory disappear.
We are plagued with injuries and not a lot of wins...

Yesterday the Celtics' fans grew worried; 'though we won.
Rondo tore his ACL - which means his season's done.
That's a major problem.  Rajon Rondo has been key
Now that it's the Heat that cheers at "Ray Allen for threeee!"

I still cannot talk about the Patriots' collapse.
It left me depressed and I'm afraid I may relapse.
21 unanswered points? Just what the heck was that?
Since when is our Offense so spectacularly flat?

Good news is that now I can enjoy the Super Bowl.
If your team is in it, watching football takes its toll.
Patriots are out of it; they've packed away their pads.
I don't care who wins the game; I'll watch it for the ads.

Pity the poor Bruins though, with such a daunting task;
All the hopes of Boston fans on them and  Tuukka Rask.
Celtics are in trouble now that Rajon Rondo's out.
Boston fans need some sports team that we can brag about.

The Boston Red Sox - Yoouuuk! The View From the Pink Hat Camp

Pink at heart.

Red Sox team's performance lately's been beyond rebuke -
Only thing that makes me sad? They've gone and traded Youk.
So, another Red Sox hero showing signs of rust,
Joins the list of stars the management's left in the dust.

Nomar, Moe and Pedro...  Okay - Manny? Not so much.
Just this year it's Wake and Tek with whom the fans lost touch.
Here in Boston, if you use your heart and not the stats,
Sports announcers have a name for you...  We're called "Pink Hats."

(That name is a reference to a game they like to play;
Find the drunkest girl in pink and see what she will say.)
My B hat is blue and red and yet - my heart is pink.
Every time we lose a guy I love my spirits sink.

Yes, I know that modern payment structures need the trade;
That it's how today's enormous salaries get paid,
And I also know Will Middlebrooks' been playing great,
But I'll miss the yells of "Yoouuuk!" when he stepped to the plate.

Going to Chicago - Switching Sox from Red to White...
Took his name-plate down before the game was through last night.
Call me Pink Hat all you wish but I think that's just wrong.
Glad he heard the cheers he's earned before he moved along.

The Boston Celtics - A Prayer to the Sports Gods

Celtics face game 7 and I'm praying I was wrong;
That the sports gods do not plan to string us fans along.
Hoping that the era of our Big 3 isn't dead;
That the Celtics win the series they so lately led.

Luck will have to favor us to stave off a defeat.
Last night, it was pretty clear, the sports gods chose the Heat.
Nothing seemed to go our way - we couldn't catch a break.
Don't know how much more of this my Celtics' heart can take.

Basketballs can seem to jump through hoops...  But, sometimes not.
Last night, in the Garden, Celtics couldn't make a shot.
Pierce would throw it up and it just rattled off the rim.
Plus, let's not forget LeBron... There was no stopping him.

Garnett, and now Rondo, have both proven that they're tough.
(Have you tried those knuckle push-ups? Trust me, 1's enough.)
Garden fans sent up a cheer that sounded like a prayer;
"Let's Go Celtics!" Please, dear sports gods, help us out down there.

This Week in Boston Sports

https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQWu8bEsEkfjtT10Is3H85niYygeW2zHI4SzzYOVS2Z034tfwVvwA
Perhaps we were a (trifle) too cocky?
Summing up this week in Boston sports is not much fun.
Only good news to report is that the Celtics won;
Beat Atlanta's Hawks to make it to the second round.
They're the only Ray of light, in Boston, to be found.

Carl Beane - he's the Voice of Fenway - died; a heart attack.
Matt Light just retired; Brady's sure to feel his lack.
Seau's dead.  The Red Sox are imploding.  Holy crap!
Watched the news the other night and saw Josh Beckett snap.

He is taking lots of heat for playing golf when he
Should have been recovering from recent injury.
Fenway's Faithful booed him off the field and he was mad.
Can't say that I blame him; stuff like that makes me feel bad.

No team out there wants to lose.  Let's give the guys a break.
Give them time to work it out; watch basketball instead...
Thank God for the Celtics and the fact that you're not dead.

Carl Beane; the Voice of Fenway for the last 10 years, dead at age 59.

The Boston Bruins - Goodbye at the Garden

Boston Bruins saluted their fans at the Garden last night.  Their fans saluted them right back.

Last night, Boston sports fans saw their hopes collapse in ruins;
Capitals of Washington were here...  They beat the Bruins.
Stunned and silent hockey fans sat, slumping, in their seat.
Shocked - for just a moment - by their overtime defeat.

Then they did the city proud.  They rose and cheered the team.
Garden's roof resounded with the crowd's approving scream.
Though the skill is not the first that most of us would choose,
Unlike many cities; Boston's fans know how to lose.

Later...

I may have to eat my words; I read the Twittersphere -
Found that shocking racial slurs originated here.
No excuses for such crap - not even when you're mad.
Seems a few Neanderthals have made us all look bad.
