The Boston Red Sox - "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"

In the past if someone's horse was suffering - in pain -
They would get a gun and put a bullet through its brain.
These days we use lethal drugs to put a sick horse down
Or, if you're the Red Sox, you just run him out of town.

I won't add my voice to those who'd beat a horse that's dead.
Poor, old Bobby Valentine, who's hanging by a thread,
Must already know it's time to shop his resume'.
I would bet the man is gone by 5 o'clock today.

(Later...  but not much.)

Didn't even take 'til 5 for Valentine to go.
I'm not sad to see him leaving town, although I know
He is not the only one for Red Sox fans to blame.
Wonder which new, sacrificial lamb the team will name?

The Boston Red Sox - Yoouuuk! The View From the Pink Hat Camp

Pink at heart.

Red Sox team's performance lately's been beyond rebuke -
Only thing that makes me sad? They've gone and traded Youk.
So, another Red Sox hero showing signs of rust,
Joins the list of stars the management's left in the dust.

Nomar, Moe and Pedro...  Okay - Manny? Not so much.
Just this year it's Wake and Tek with whom the fans lost touch.
Here in Boston, if you use your heart and not the stats,
Sports announcers have a name for you...  We're called "Pink Hats."

(That name is a reference to a game they like to play;
Find the drunkest girl in pink and see what she will say.)
My B hat is blue and red and yet - my heart is pink.
Every time we lose a guy I love my spirits sink.

Yes, I know that modern payment structures need the trade;
That it's how today's enormous salaries get paid,
And I also know Will Middlebrooks' been playing great,
But I'll miss the yells of "Yoouuuk!" when he stepped to the plate.

Going to Chicago - Switching Sox from Red to White...
Took his name-plate down before the game was through last night.
Call me Pink Hat all you wish but I think that's just wrong.
Glad he heard the cheers he's earned before he moved along.

The Boston Red Sox - Streaks, Slander, and Sports Gods

Will Rhymes is taken off the field after he collapsed during a game against the Boston Red Sox at Tropicana Field on May 16, 2012. (Photo by J. Meric/Getty Images)
Thoughts and prayers are with Will Rhymes, who collapsed during last night's game.  Be well. (Photo credit; CBS)

I am rather superstitious when it comes to sports;
Even without evidence that holds up in the courts,
I believe that sports gods lurk around the fields of play
Taking note of everything a Faithful fan might say.

Therefore, I've not said one word, at all, throughout the week
Out of fear that I would break the Red Sox' winning streak;
But, last night against the Rays - the score at 2 to 1
(Still without a peep from me) that lovely stretch was done.

Thank you for the ride sports gods; I like the winning kind...
Losing streaks cause local sports-talk guys to lose their mind.
They get nasty to their callers...  Maybe it's their jobs.
Baseball's just a game we play; they needn't be such snobs.

If you don't agree with them, they think you're pretty dumb.
(Tell them that you love them first; they may throw you a crumb.)
Wish they'd give the Sox a break because, from what I hear,
You should be encouraging when there are sports gods near.
