FLOTUS on a Mission

 Image result for melania trump, really I don't care

"I really don't care. Do U?" Melania's coat read.
Wonder what was going through the First Lady's staff's head.
That is not the message that I'd think they'd want to send.
Even if the White House doesn't care, can't they pretend?

Donald Trump claims she was just expressing her disdain
For the "main-stream media" and not for children's pain.
That strikes me as just another presidential lie...
I don't trust a word he says but, if not that, then why?

Why on earth would anyone emblazon such a phrase
On their back? Their lack of sense continues to amaze.
That's the kind of thing I'd be expecting from a troll.
Never thought I'd live to see the FLOTUS in that role.

Suffer the Little Children...

Image result for crying immigrant children separated from parents
(Photo courtesy of The Washington Post)

I've been hearing Donald Trump's supporters justify
Tearing little children from their parents when they try
Crossing at the U.S. border, hoping to obtain
Safety and asylum here...  They're making me insane.

How dare they start spouting scripture at me? In God's name
Have these so called "Christian people" got so little shame
That they'd countenance the use of children to advance
Funding for a border wall?  That seems to be their stance.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump keeps lying; blaming Democrats
And his friends on FOX have claimed the whiny, little brats,
Torn away from parents' arms are "acting" when they cry.
Is there nothing sacred to the folks who back this guy?

You May Say I'm A Dreamer...

 Image result for dreamers daca memes

Dreamers got a rude awakening from Donald Trump;
He kept campaign promises he made while on the stump.
He's eliminating DACA which protects a kid
Who was not responsible for what their parents did.

95% of them, in college or employed,
Will not have the luxury they formerly enjoyed
Of not fearing deportation from the only place
They have ever known.  This is a national disgrace.

Like a deer caught in the headlights, Dreamers registered.
ICE knows where to find them now that action's not deferred.
I guess when the President said he would show some heart
He meant that he'd give Dreamers a six month running start.

Defunding DHS?

File:Flag of the United States Department of Homeland Security.png

As the Friday deadline looms to de-fund DHS,
Is the Congress hard at work on compromising? Guess.
If you thought; 'Of course they are... They don't dare drop this ball,'
Sorry to inform you - that was not the proper call.

GOP Conservatives say funding's gonna halt
If they do not get their way, and it's Obama's fault.
All because the President set new priorities
For illegals we deport from our communities.

Focusing on criminals - not kids and moms and dads.
Won't spend shrinking budgets to deport new high-school grads.
That's enraged Republicans enough they say they will
Take a stand on it ('though not an Immigration bill.)

So much for their party's claim of strongest on Defense...
Put us all at risk to build a longer, border fence?
We face bigger threats to our Homeland's Security.
How dare they not pay the folks protecting you and me?

Thumbs Up for the President

President Obama made a
If only...  (Photo/compliancecampaign.wordpress.com)

If you were the Emperor of these United States
You could have opponents' heads served up to you on plates.
If you found the arguments they used against you dumb
You could silence critics with a downward twist of thumb.

You could make your Senators (or Congressmen) obey
If you really were the lord of all that you survey.
But, if you're a President who wants to fix a flaw
You must keep your actions in compliance with the law.

You may only act as other Presidents have done;
Setting your priorities so things are smoothly run.
Even though the lions say they'll fight you "tooth and nail"
Leaders do not let our immigration system fail.

Poisoning the Well

Seems to me the well's been poisoned for a long time.(dickysdoodles.blogspot.com)

Buckle up your seat-belts, folks...  We face a bumpy ride
('though it's not as if our recent trip has been a glide.)
Lame duck Congress members are preparing for a fight;
Want to make a point instead of doing what is right.

Do not poison future wells, Republicans have said;
While conceding that an Immigration bill is dead.
Even though the system's badly broken, I'm afraid,
They insist Obama break the promises he's made.

If the President does not give in to their demands
Mitch McConnell says the GOP will wash its hands
Of the next two years and let the country go to hell...
Wonder if they'll wash with water from the poisoned well?

Dear Border States... Good Luck With That

There's been a major surge in unaccompanied children detained at the U.S. border.

If you've been a parent, think of how bad it must be
When the situation makes you grab your child and flee.
Kids as young as 10 have been arriving on their own;
Children, far away from home... They're frightened and alone.

Coming here because they've heard we have to let them in
And, until their case is heard, they'll get to live with kin.
That would not be incorrect and they can thank George Bush.
Now Obama's looking for a way that he can push

Legislation through a Congress that's completely stalled;
Though aware that Immigration must be overhauled,
Still they will not touch it with the mid-terms underway.
Thus, according to the law, the refugees can stay.

Tell that to the angry mobs in all the border states
Who say that they've got enough, already, on their plates.
'though they make a valid point it doesn't change the fact
President Obama cannot make the Congress act.

Congressional Update - A Rhyme

EC_121205_sheneman.jpg

Update on the Congress (for the few of us who care...
Those with any interest in what goes on up there)
Congress reached a compromise and passed a Farming Bill,
Raised the ceiling on the debt - that's if the Senate will.

That seems pretty likely so, at least, they'll get that done.
It might be the last thing, though... They've got campaigns to run.
Boehner wouldn't give an Immigration Bill a chance.
GOP's afraid their base would look at them askance.

In mid-term elections would be handing them their coat
If they gave the President and Democrats a "win,"
Once again, our immigrants will take one on the chin.

It is so short-sighted when we cater to extremes,
Seemingly forgetting that we're not on different teams.
We're "one nation - indivisible..." At least, we were.
Well...  Except for Bachmann; I am disavowing her.

The State of the Union - A Re-Cap in Rhyme

(Photo/LadyLiberty.com)

Said that, in the last five years, we've all come pretty far.
Companies are hiring, the Market's through the roof;
Cited recent studies, gave examples, offered proof.

Wasn't soaring oratory, more a laundry list.
Made a plea to Congress just before he slapped their wrist;
Said he wants to work together but he also will
Act, at times, to circumvent opponents on the Hill.

He was not antagonistic towards the GOP
But he made it very clear; that's how it's gonna be.
I can't really blame Obama...  What else can he do?
When he asked for 40 things last year they gave him 2.

And the 2 he got he didn't get without a fight...
Every single bill faced opposition from the Right.
Maybe immigration will lure folks across the aisle;
Congress working as it should...  Ain't seen that in a while.

Adios Immigration Reform

"No."  Speaker Boehner won't allow the Senate's bill on immigration reform to come to a vote in the House of Representatives because a small majority of Republicans are opposed. (Photo/Metro.US)
Once again, the People's Will gets to the House and dies
And another opportunity slips by those guys.
"No," said Speaker Boehner.  "Senate's Bill won't get a vote."
Says there are provisions in it that will never float.

Boehner says that House Republicans are gonna write
Their own version of a bill...  Its future isn't bright.
GOP is fine with longer fences, extra guards;
But a path to citizenship isn't in the cards.

Democrats insist that path has got to be a part
Of an Immigration Bill, so it's doomed from the start.
Speaker Boehner's stance on this has made the outlook grim.
Wish he'd give the Senate's Bill a chance to sink or swim.

The Writing on the Wall is in Spanish

Photo/PBS.org

Senate looks like it might pass an Immigration Bill...
Hallelujah! They'll accomplish something on the Hill.
Gang of 8 is hoping to get more than 60 votes.
I wish them success...  Although, my inner cynic notes

Did Republicans see where their opposition led.

And, there's still the House to get through; voting could be tight,
This time though, it looks as if the bill is gonna pass.
GOP's afraid that they'll be voted out en masse.

President Obama says he'll sign it right away.
Thousands of our immigrants will get the chance to stay.
'though it won't solve every problem it still fixes some.
In D.C. you count your wins no matter how they come.

The 113th Congress - Bi-Partisan Immigration Reform

Photo credit/ PastorRicky99.blogspot.com

Looks like immigration policies will see reform.
Both sides came together in a nearly perfect storm.
President Obama keeps a promise that he made.
G.O.P. just watched their hopes for power start to fade.

John McCain acknowledged demographic changes had
Made the future chances for his party pretty bad.
If they didn't change their tune, the only people who
Would vote for Republicans were white (and older, too.)

Bobby Jindal says they have to keep from acting dumb,
Need to watch their rhetoric - throw immigrants a crumb.
Now it's in their interests, Republicans will act.
Nothing like elections to enlighten them to fact.

Race for the White House - Are You Kidding Me?

Cartoon credit - Mike Keefe, The Denver Post

Although I can understand the people who believe
Government's supposed to make illegal people leave...
Folks who worry that it's bad to not enforce the law,
Think the President is wrong to do so...  Blah, blah, blah.

Okay, fine...  I get the point. But, here's what blows my mind;
They're the guys who made a compromise so hard to find.
Romney claims the President has never even tried...
Don't believe the word of those who tell you that. They've lied.

Dream Act was an early loss.  Republicans refused.
Filibustered everything; yet now they've all accused;
President Obama acted unilaterally.
I am, frankly, staggered by the rank hypocrisy.

Do I think the current stop-gap measure's very good?
No, of course it isn't.  Should we fix it?  Yes, we should.
But, for now, we're stuck with this and I would be surprised
If, under Mitt Romney, any Dreams get realized.
