The New England Patriots - Just Pay The Man

 Rob Gronkowski SI Cover

My New England Patriots played Wednesday - didn't win.
Refs called a receiver out when he was clearly in.
Lost it to World Champions; The New York football Giants.
*(Made a bet with Mr. S. and, therefore, in compliance

With the terms on which we shook, I have to call them that.
If I'd won he had to throw away his Yankees hat.)
Belichick cares more about deciding who to cut.

Doesn't give the game away before the season starts.
'til then all his players are so many moving parts.
Once it counts, this football master plays the game like chess.
I am very confident he'll win a lot, unless...

There is really something to the S.I. cover curse.
Football is so dangerous and bad calls make it worse.
Plus, it isn't only Gronk; there's Madden's cover too.
Time to tell Commissioner Goodell what he should do;

Pity the replacement refs; their jobs can't be much fun.
Sure, it was amusing - once - but now pre-season's done.
Now the games begin to count. Bring back real referees.
Not as if they've asked for much.  Just pay them...  Pretty please?

The Massachusetts' Senate Race

Elizabeth Warren
Elizabeth Warren, Democratic candidate for Senate

Almost everyone I know's a liberal Democrat...
Here in Massachusetts they could not imagine that
I would ever give Scott Brown some credit or a look;
Just assume that Warren has my vote and close the book.

After all, I do agree with all of Warren's views,
And the fact she's smarter than him isn't breaking news,
But I've had some contact with his office on a bill -
Didn't like positions he had taken on the Hill -

They responded right away.  He later changed his vote.
Got a lovely calendar after my thank you note.
Brown agrees to compromise; he's middle of the road.
Still, it makes me nervous that his coffers overflowed

With donations corporations gave to help him win
Leading me to wonder if, maybe, the fix is in.
One is known to others by the company he keeps.
Wall Street wants Scott Brown to win - contributed in heaps.

So, I guess I'm guilty of what I profess to hate;
I will vote for Warren and contribute to the state
Of affairs (or lack thereof) the Senate has become.
Voting for a guy because he's nice would just be dumb

The Boston Red Sox - In Memoriam: Johnny Pesky

Johnny Pesky (1919-2012) Photo credit: The Boston Herald
Very saddened by the news that Johnny Pesky's died.
One could not have asked for a more charming native guide.
Pesky was a Red Sox legend...  Stories by the score
Shared with younger players about glory days of yore.

Over 7 decades now that Johnny's been the heart;
Known as Mister Red Sox, he will always be a part
Of the park that was his life - the fabled Pesky Pole;
Obstacle which home-run hitters' hopes so often stole.

Never made the Hall of Fame - the war got in the way -
Though he hit .300, behind Williams, in his day.
Played 10 years but never left.  He managed for awhile
(Pesky was well noted for his ever present smile)

Was a coach, announced a bit, as manager - rehired.
Johnny Pesky lived to see his number get retired.
Not as if his death's a shock...  The man was 92.
Even so, I find the news has left me feeling blue.

Seems like something vital - a connection to the dream -
Gone, like Johnny Pesky.  'though the current Red Sox team
Needs a shot of something that is missing from before.
Now that God's called Pesky home, please - someone - get  Bob Doerr.
