Do The Math

 

How is it, as millions try to flee from Irma's path,

Climate science's deniers still can't do the math?

This is what the scientists predicted coming true.

Ocean's gotten warmer; now the bill is coming due.

Storms that only happen every thousand years or so

Hitting the United States for two weeks in a row?

Catastrophic floods in Houston; Florida's up next.

It seems evident to me that Mother Nature's vexed.

If our prayers aren't answered - if the hurricane won't turn -

I hope Mar-a-Lago floods.  Then, maybe, Trump will learn

It's not just the "little people" global warming hurts,

Businessmen like him are also gonna lose their shirts.

I Guess We Won't Always Have Paris

 

Trump just pulled us out of Paris...  Makes me wanna weep.

Stomach's churning and I'm having nightmares when I sleep.

Planet Earth's the only home the human race has got -

I'll be dead before the oceans rise...  My sons will not.

'though it's hard to narrow his disasters down to one

So far, this could be the worst thing Donald Trump has done.

Climate change is global. Now our country's walked away.

China's filled the role of leadership we used to play.

All the nations of the world and scientists agree

Global warming's happening.  Well, all except for three:

Syria and Nicaragua...  The United States.

Maybe we can lead the countries Mother Nature hates?

Centuries of conflict between scientists and priests:

Nature of the universe, if we evolved from beasts,

If God gave mankind dominion over all the Earth,

How it's even possible to have a virgin birth.

Now a new Encyclical gives scientists some hope

That they could be looking at a different kind of Pope.

This Pope studied chemistry before he joined the Church;

Francis is inclined to heed the climate change research.

Planet's getting warmer and a major cause is man.

Scientists don't speak the language of the Vatican;

This time, though, their evidence supports the Holy See

And - on man's poor stewardship of Earth - both sides agree.

Is imperative to change a moral one, or not?

In the end it doesn't matter to the Earth a lot.

If we all continue to befoul the place we live

Neither God nor nature's laws are likely to forgive.

NASA Says We're Screwed

Doesn't matter if you doubt that man caused climate change,

If you aren't concerned by now or don't believe it's strange

That the weather's out of whack - the seasons are delayed -

NASA says Antarctica is melting...  Be afraid.

In about a hundred years its glaciers will be gone

Meaning that the land the ice accumulated on,

Without all that weight, will rise and so, too, will the seas;

Causing devastation almost everyone agrees.

Process cannot be reversed, the NASA spokesman said.

Warmer water seeped between the glaciers and sea bed;

Now they're melting from the bottom as well as the top.

We are screwed.  There's nothing we can do to make it stop.

If we don't take action now - prepare as oceans rise -

Because we're too busy arguing that science lies

It won't matter anyway since it will be too late.

Mother Nature isn't proving open to debate.

Wrote a rhyme the other day...  I swear, it was a joke.

Said the cold sent global-warming worries up in smoke.

Sent it to the only weatherman I really trust...

Judging by his terse response, my humor was a bust.

Frankly, I was puzzled when it wasn't well received

Until realizing that some people still believed

That a polar vortex moving farther to the south

Proves there's a conspiracy.  Next time I'll shut my mouth.

When did scientific education get so bad?

Global Warming?

I thought that New England had it tough with cold and snow

'til I heard that Mid West temps are 24 below...

That's so cold that body parts will freeze and then fall off;

Take a breath, your lungs go into shock - you start to cough.

That's so cold that 16 people have already died;

So cold that some planes can't fly - folks have to stay inside.

Polar vortex sucked the slightest trace of heat they had.

Half the country's feeling it (although, not half as bad.)

Winter crops in Florida might also start to freeze.

Farmers have to pray the cold won't damage orange trees.

Right now, global warming seems like it could be a plan;

Weather like this is not fit for neither beast nor man.

Plum Island

Summers on Plum Island; I was young - without a care.

Just went back to see the place; it almost wasn't there.

Back, when I was just a girl, we'd hit the beach at dawn...

That was 30 years ago and now that beach is gone.

I grew up on 53rd; our house was on the beach.

When we ran, we kids were out of breath before we'd reach

Sand that would be cool enough to soothe our burning feet;

Plunging into freezing water...  More akin to sleet.

Now our house is on a cliff; our neighbor's in the sea.

Storms have made my childhood beach a fading memory.

As Plum Island drifts away and more homes hit the drink

Residents want action, but it's harder than you'd think.

Places like Plum Island (they're called Barriers) are sand.

Back when people bought their homes they didn't understand

That they couldn't stop the sea from moving sand around,

And their lovely summer homes were built on shifting ground.

Only thing that holds the place together is the grass

So, like everything in life, the island, too, shall pass.

Ocean level's rising and, with storms a certainty,

There is not a lot that can be done to stop the sea.

Dear Boys... You Are Killing Your Mother

Way below 0.

Took the dog outside today.  I think I froze my toes.

Only out for minutes and I couldn't feel my nose.

I wore coat and hat and gloves and still - my fingers? Numb.

Neither son wore coats today 'cause teenage boys are dumb.

Just in case you're thinking that they don't own coats? They do.

Both of them have winter coats and we have extras, too.

Three are in a locker, there's another at a friend's,

One is lost, the other is the jacket that he lends

To his lovely girlfriend who, I bet, displayed good sense;

Bundled up and warm and so, my two loves - no offense -

Global warming doesn't mean it's hot out every day.

Make your poor mom happy and wear coats next time, okay?
