The Boston Red Sox Home Opener - 2018

Image result for frozen red sox player
(A more appropriate sport for current conditions at Fenway Park.)

Red Sox' Opener's today...  They're home at Fenway Park,
Where the wind chill feels like it's below the freezing mark.
Fans will bundle up in layers and make a joyous sound
When the Red Sox take the field and Price steps on the mound.

I refuse to make predictions about who will win;
('though we've started 5 and 1) it's still a sports gods' sin.
It is much too early to risk jinxing anything...
Up here, where the Red Sox play, it isn't even spring.

They're predicting snow tomorrow - Saturday, as well.
After that they say we'll have a lengthy, chilly spell.
At the rate that temps are falling down on Yawkey Way
We should just delay the Red Sox. Let the Bruins play.

B Strong... Again

Lt. Edward Walsh and Michael Kennedy

Red Sox are in Boston; their Home Opener's today
And my lucky sister gets to go and see them play...
Watch them get their rings and raise the banner in the park.
We could use our Red Sox - Boston's mood is rather dark.

We've just buried firemen from Engine 33,
Rushed into a burning building, as such heroes do.
(Both were 1st responders when the Marathon bombs blew.)

Game today is dedicated to the men we've lost.
Sox hope we can start to heal when that 1st pitch is tossed.
P.S. To my sister; If you run into Ortiz,
Don't forget to look into the Samsung and say "Cheese!"

Opening Day - 2014

Bands are playing somewhere, weather's warm, and hearts are light.
Baseball season's starting; it's the first game of the year.
Somewhere fans need sunscreen at the ball park, but not here.

Here the rain is falling and, at times, it's mixed with sleet.
Not the kind of day for watching baseball teams compete.
Red Sox are in Baltimore with Lester on the mound:
Tuesday at the White House, 2 more games, then homeward bound.

Friday is their Opener at Fenway...  If you hold
Tickets for that game, then bundle up. It will be cold.
I have gone to Openers when they're predicting snow.
Fenway can be freezing when those ocean breezes blow.

That will not stop Red Sox fans because we're Boston Strong.
When they wave the banner and start singing Tessie's song,
Even if the sun is shining warmly down elsewhere,
It's the kind of moment Fenway's Faithful want to share.

The Boston Red Sox - The 2013 Home Opener

We're all pink hats for the Home Opener. (Photo/Cognoscenti)

It's a perfect, springtime day for crowds on Yawkey Way;
Faithful fans who've come to watch the Boston Red Sox play.
It's the team's Home Opener - they're currently in 1st -
And, to make it sweeter, New York's Yankees tied for worst.

Expectations are not high for how our season ends
(And that was before we see if Lackey's "bicep" mends.)
Farrell has his work cut out as he rebuilds the team...
Even so, that doesn't mean a "pink hat" fan can't dream.

Yes, I know that baseball season's barely even started.
That it's likely, come October, I'll be broken-hearted.
But it is enough for me, this early April day,
That my 1st place Red Sox are returning to Fenway.

Opening Day - Yankees v. Red Sox: Fingers Crossed

(Photo/carlyfinseth.com)

Yankees host the Red Sox in their Opener today.
I am always trepidatious when these 2 teams play,
But this day is special 'cause it falls on April 1st,
Meaning that the sports gods may decide to do their worst.

April Fool's Day pranks can be amusing; sometimes, not.
If the joke is on New York then Boston has a shot.
In a normal Opener the home team, mostly, wins;
Baseball fans read omens from the way their team begins.

But, because it's April Fools, the sports gods may decide
They will intervene by helping out the other side.
In this case that side is mine.  I've got my fingers crossed
That tomorrow's headlines read; The New York Yankees lost

The Boston Red Sox - A Prayer for the Home Opener

Should have asked for winning in my prayer the other week;
When I told the sports gods that the only boon I'd seek
Was a starting record better than the year before
(And that wish was granted - barely - if you're keeping score).

Red Sox stand at 1 and 5.  Last year? Naught and 6.
Thanks a lot there, sports gods.  Now, could you guys, maybe, fix
Problems with the pitching for our Opener today?
Let the Red Sox win at home we, in the Nation, pray.

I can smell the popcorn and the sausages from here...
Please dear sports gods - give us Red Sox fans something to cheer.
Haven't I been good and true?  A Faithful fan and daughter?
Let the stands of Fenway ring with strains of Dirty Water.

  Good luck Josh Beckett!

Open in case of Victory.
