A Patriot In His Own Mind

Brian Williams and Edward Snowden.

"Coward and a traitor" or a patriot who's brave?
Edward Snowden, in a recent interview he gave,
Said to Brian Williams he's a patriotic guy
Who exposed abuses he discovered as a spy.

Tried to go through proper channels over his concerns.
Wouldn't get a chance to make his case if he returns.
(He's accused of treason; says his trial would not be fair.)
Only stayed in Russia 'cause the U.S. trapped him there.

Patriot or traitor?  It depends how you define
Service to your country...  Did Ed Snowden cross the line?
Are his leaks on NSA something we need to know
Or has our intelligence received a fatal blow?

I believe, in Snowden's mind, he served the greater good.
With his theft he's proven almost anybody could
Access all our information...  Privacy is dead
And the only reason that we know is thanks to Ed.

Calling the Kettle Black

 D.o.J. has made it clear it isn't playing games;
Issued warrants for arrests that named some Chinese names.
5 men in their military we've accused of hacking...
Though our moral high-ground, after Edward Snowden's, lacking.

Justice claims it's not the same as what our country does;
China spies on companies and that's worse than ours was.
When we spy it's not a crime - when China does it is...
Our Ambassador was summoned.  Glad my job's not his.

Tensions are already high with us and the Chinese
Over actions they've committed on South China Seas.
Philippines and Vietnam are mad at China, too
And they wonder what their U.S. allies plan to do.

Wish we'd picked a better battle than the one we did.
After Edward Snowden's leaks blew off NSA's lid
Seems to me our outrage at their cyber hack-attack
Feels a lot like our pot's calling China's kettle black.

Dear NSA - Really?

(Graphic/secretsofthefed.com)

General Alexander, he's the head of NSA,
Came before the Congress, testified the other day
Said their spying's justified and not that big a deal.
Every country has some secrets others try to steal.

In related testimony, someone else was asked;
Aren't we being hard on NSA since they've been tasked
With the job of keeping us protected from attacks?
Why should we be worried what they do behind our backs?

Privacy's not violated if nobody knows?
No one has complained about surveillance; thus, it shows
4th Amendment wasn't violated by the Feds?

We can't just blame Edward Snowden 'cause he spilled the beans.
Time to take a long, hard look at this and what it means.
I know we need information.  I am not a dope...
But I can't believe we're really spying on the Pope.

Paranoia Will Destroy Ya.

Intercepted by NSA - omg... they know. hide the weed.  (Photo/Getty Images)

To the shock of no one, we've been spying on our friends.
Bugged the German Chancellor, an action that offends
All the European leaders...  Don't forget Brazil.
NSA may keep us safe, but this is overkill.

Edward Snowden told the world how much our country spies,
Putting an enormous strain on diplomatic ties.
Lucky us - recovery in Europe's not robust -
They need us despite the evidence of our mistrust.

Doesn't make us popular, however...  Not at all.
France's President has said we've got a lot of gall.
We don't have that many allies; those we've got are mad.
Fallout from these revelations has been very bad.

Brussels has been buzzing; we have angered all our friends.
They have got a right to be.  We have to make amends.
President must put a stop to this.  He said he would...
Learned that just because you can does not mean that you should.

Dear NSA... How Convenient

(Image/Bydio.com)

I've grown rather cynical I guess, because (to me)
Timing on this terror threat helps out an agency
Facing pointed questions due to Edward Snowden's leaks...
Making use of intel like their secret program seeks.

Isn't it convenient that, as opposition grew,
It's thanks to these programs that somebody even knew
Terrorists were plotting out an imminent attack?
Just a small reminder; NSA has got your back.

I don't think they've made this up; I'm sure the threat is real
(And, if something happens - Oh, how terrible I'll feel)
But, it's now a guarantee that PRISM gets the nod,
Proving that the NSA can speak, direct, to God.

Dear Edward Snowden... Put A Cork In It

Edward Snowden, the NSA leaker, is popular in his new home town.  Photo/HuffingtonPost

China's had a Field Day with what Snowden's had to say.
(He's the guy who leaked the news about the NSA.)
He is making headlines in the papers over there
But the average Chinese person doesn't seem to care.

They know their own government is checking them each day,
Now they're asking what the big deal is here anyway?
Anything to keep them safe from terrorism, please.

As for Edward Snowden - he has gone too far, I fear.
Thank you for the heads-up kid, but we'll take it from here.
Time to put a cork in it...  Some secrets should be kept.
Putin doesn't need to know we know  he overslept.
