Damned If We Do...

(Courtesy of/http://pretmetmohammed.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/pmm-shia-sunni.jpg)

Reformations are not pretty (that's to say the least.)
Look at the example now throughout the Middle East.
Muslims, having splintered into multitudes of sects,
Each of them interpreting the same religious texts

Do not trust each other well enough to compromise;
Ancient grievances behind the chaos on the rise.
Every time we've intervened we've just made matters worse.
Every time that someone dies it's us the mullahs curse.

Time we let Islamic leaders deal with their own crap;
We should stick to wiping ISIL forces off the map.
There's no winning strategy to fight religious wars.
All that we'll accomplish is to die on foreign shores.

Failing in Yemen

Saudi Arabia Launches Air Strikes in Yemen
(Courtesy of/news.yahoo.com)
No one wants to say that Yemen's failing as a state
But the situation on the ground ain't looking great.
President has fled the country; Houthis hold the streets...
I'd say the criteria for failing's one it meets.

Saudis and Iranians engaged in proxy war;
Former leaders want to loot the country even more.
Sunni fighting Shia with al Qaeda in the mix
Yemen's problems may yet prove impossible to fix.

On the brink of civil war - the final coffin nail -
What else would you call this if it's not an epic fail?
U.S. forces left already; writing's on the wall
As another sign of Arab Spring becomes its Fall.

The UN and ISIL - Promises, Promises

President Obama addressed the UN General Assembly yesterday. (Photo/in.reuters.com)

President Obama gave a speech at the UN
(Kinda like when Daniel stepped into the lions' den)
He stood up to Russia in support of the Ukraine;
Said that Putin's actions there would cost more than they'd gain.

Mainly though, he spoke about the flailing Middle East;
Pointing out, when tensions rise, religions are the yeast.
Sunni versus Shia versus Christian versus Jew...
When you fund a sect you're funding terrorism, too.

Voting was unanimous; the Council stands opposed
To the new Islamic State (whose oil fields we've just closed.)
Countries pledged to do their part - whatever that might be.
Will they keep their solemn words? We'll have to wait and see.

Whacking Moles

522979 397881453618328 386793501 n Funny whack a mole

Critics are complaining that Obama's stated goal -
Going after ISIL - is like playing "Whack a Mole."
First we hit al Qaeda hard - invade Afghanistan;
Hit again when they reorganize in Pakistan.

Hammer them in Africa; they pop up in Iraq.
When they crawl out of their holes we take another whack.
'though the critics have a point, it isn't quite the same...
These moles want to hurt us and the fight is not a game.

True, these guys are vermin who we'll have to hunt and kill
And this infestation will keep spreading there until
Countries in the region put their differences aside;
Muslim leaders find a way to heal their great divide.

If they cannot pull together things will fall apart...
Still, our coalition to fight ISIL is a start.
Enemies of enemies could, possibly, be friends;
That's the only way extremist terrorism ends.

ISIS Makes Dramatic Gains in Iraq

ISIS forces now control a large swath of Iraq.
Baghdad asked if we would send some U.S. assets back.
Iraq's army stripped to skivvies, dropped their guns and ran.
(Clearly, then, our training mission didn't go to plan.)

People under ISIS rule must be the ones opposed.
Islam needs a Reformation...  Those can't be imposed.
Muslims have to be the ones who move beyond the past.
Let them form their Caliphate; the thing will never last.

Sunni, Shia, Kurdish tribes; a thousand different clans...
Let them live as ISIS wants.  There won't be many fans.
This war is sectarian and one we shouldn't fight.
Even with our best intentions, we won't get it right.

Middle East Update - Making Friends Wherever We Go.

Iraq isn't better with us gone; in fact, it's worse.
Sunnis and the Shia are both fighting to reverse
Any signs of progress that their country may have made.
Now, it seems, they're wishing that our weapons systems stayed.

Sharing common borders with the Syrians, Iraq
Is a frequent target of a suicide attack.
Someone blows themselves - and others - into bloody bits;
Almost every single day some random violence hits.

Saudis are unhappy we've not played a larger role;
Don't believe it's possible that we'll achieve our goal
Of a peaceful Middle East until Assad is stopped.
Israel's not thrilled Iran might get its sanctions dropped.

Egypt's mad at funding cuts (because they had a coup.)
Pakistan and Libya are angry with us, too.
Nation building's not our strength so, once a war gets won,
We should not just walk away from countries...  We should run.

Across the Pond - Syria and the Russians

Putin to Meet With Ahmadinejad Before Nuclear Talks
Putin and Ahmadinejad must be so proud.

Really wish that I'd been wrong but, sadly, I was not
Yet another battle against babies has been fought.
Youngest victim - 3 months old - they stabbed him through the head.
Assad will not stop 'til every rebel Sunni's dead.

I cannot believe the Russian people are aware
Of what Assad's doing with their weapons or they'd share
In the world's revulsion...  Then they'd back a U.N. vote.
Russian people I have met would not sell him a coat...

All I can imagine is that Putin plain forgot
Russia's a democracy and citizens won't stand
For supporting monsters who have gotten out of hand.
