Journeying to The Tower

 

I am on a journey to The Tower; it's my third...

Which, you'd think, would mean I'd stop and savor every word;

Slow it down. No need to rush - I know how this all ends.

But, that's not the way that I'm re-reading them, my friends.

Once again, these tales of Roland's quest swept me away.

Right now I'm in Mejis but I'll finish there today.

I expect to reach the Calla later on tonight.

I can't seem to pace myself; I've given up the fight.

I'm all in. Absorbed (again) by Sai King's masterpiece.

Not until the journey's end will my obsession cease.

Therefore, you may not hear from me for a week or so.

Hope that you and yours stay well, but now I gotta go.

Making King Converts

 

I love it when people say they don't like Stephen King;

That a "scary monster" story ain't their kinda thing.

I just smile and - maybe - ask which novels that they've read

And I recommend his mainstream books to them instead.

In the past, Shawshank Redemption always changed their mind.

Now (although I much prefer the scary monster kind)

Stephen's latest trilogy is what I recommend...

Where you don't discover there are monsters 'til the end.

My mom is a recent convert... Working on my spouse

But he's kind of busy doing work around the house.

After he's retired though, and has some time to spare

I suspect my love of Stephen King is one we'll share.

Castle Rock in Chelmsford?

I had yet to hear the news and so it was a shock

When location scouting agents stumbled on my block.

They were looking here and in some other neighborhoods;

Said they were from Warner Brothers and they liked our woods.

They are shooting Castle Rock - a Hulu TV show -

Based on books by Stephen King.  But, now I wanna know

What is it the scouting agent saw that made her think

Our woods would be suitable?  Now I'm afraid to blink.

Did she see a rabid Saint Bernard or scary clown?

Are there monsters roaming through my quiet, little town?

It's a little disconcerting when somebody looks

At your house and thinks it's like something from Stephen's books.

When The Journey Is Done

 

Growing up - becoming adults - means that we divide

Our hearts in to pieces which we scatter far and wide.

We give chunks to parents, siblings, spouses, children, friends

Hoping, if they break the piece we gave them - that it mends.

Sadly, no one gets through life without a crack or three.

Life is like a journey and nobody rides for free.

When the journey's over though, the plain and simple fact

Is the trip was pointless if our hearts are still intact.

Stephen King's new book came out today...  I gotta go.

For, as my best friends and relatives already know,

I have zero patience and am not prepared to wait;

Certain, as I am, his latest novel will be great.

I'm a fan of almost everything that Stephen writes,

Even if his stories cost me many sleepless nights.

Not because of nightmares (though he's caused a few of those)

But because, until I'd finished, my eyes wouldn't close.

Later...  But not much.

Just bought Finders Keepers.  I am eyeing it with greed.

I hope no one wants me for a while -  I'm off to read.

A Lousy Week Redeemed

 

This has been a lousy week for me - a hectic one.

Two things in its favor though; the first... It's nearly done.

It's almost the weekend, when my phone comes off the hook.

Which is great 'cause; second... Stephen King's released a book.

It came out on Tuesday and, despite so much to do,

I just started reading and I'm more than half-way through.

Only King can make 400 pages seem too short;

His Revival's excellent, I'm happy to report.

It, alone, might - almost - make the awful week I've had

Fade into the background and appear not (quite) so bad.

I have gotta hurry though; my sister wants it next.

If I haven't finished it by Monday she'll be vexed.

Just bought Stephen King's new book; I'm more than half-way done.

I'd be finished were it not for errands to be run.

I'm a Constant Reader and I gobble Stephen King...

Then I wait a month and start re-reading everything.

I have tried to pace myself before...  It doesn't work.

(Plus, with sisters waiting, I don't want to be a jerk.)

So far I am loving it, although I knew I would.

Anything he's ever written has been really good.

Boston Red Sox Fans Are Weird.

What?

Red Sox are advancing 'cause, last night, we beat the Rays.

Don't know who we're playing next; the Tigers or the A's.

All we know is we'll be here at home and better rested.

Fans have hopes so high right now, we ought'a be arrested.

Saturday is game one in the A.L. pennant chase.

Either way, whichever team the Red Sox have to face,

They will feel the Fenway Faithful - many with a beard...

Proving to the nation that, up here, we're kinda weird.

I make no predictions 'cause I want the Sox to win.

I don't want to jinx the team before the games begin.

When I write a rhyme about my teams they tend to lose.

You would not take chances either, were you in my shoes.

I bought Stephen King's latest book

And thought that I'd take a quick look.

Good Lord, he can write...

Which may cause a fight;

I can't put it down now to cook.

Guns, by Stephen King

Available through Amazon.

Stephen King has written a new essay titled Guns.

Bought it on my Kindle so I didn't freeze my buns.

Only cost a little bit and all the proceeds go

To a fund for gun reform (which could mean lots of dough.)

I would read a laundry list if that's what Stephen wrote.

If he ran for office in a state where I could vote,

I would send him to the Senate; quite a sacrifice...

No new books and I've already read his old ones - twice.

One of them I read before he pulled the book from print,

(Didn't like the Bachman books; they never had a hint

Of the light that's at the core of things that Stephen writes.)

Didn't have  to pull the book; his 1st Amendment rights

Offered him protections which he limited himself.

Thinks it's time we take high-powered weapons off the shelf,

Universal background checks, keep bullet counts to 10,

Funding for our mental health but says that, even then,

We can't ever stop the boys determined to succeed.

Wonder if an age limit is something that we need?

Seems to me these murderers are young and angry men.

Something must be done before it all shakes out again.

Not Even Stephen King...

"Study, Dammit!" - a provocative poster from Stephen's college days - is now on sale, with proceeds going to The Maine Campus and the University of Maine.

I'm a fan of Stephen King's; I'm seeing him tonight.
I think I'd read anything that he decides to write.
First time that I browsed the web ('cause I was feeling bored)
Thought I'd check out Stephen King; I found his Message Board.

Met a lovely group of people there and made some friends,
Who I will impose on for my own (quite selfish) ends;
If, perchance, some one of you who's planning to be there
And has tickets on the floor (I'm breathing thinner air);

If you get the chance to ask him questions and you're stumped,
Please don't ask him where his ideas come from - you'll get jumped.
Tell him that you love his books, admire his great skill.
Say the chance to meet him here tonight is such a thrill...

Then ask him the question that his fans all want to know;
Has he heard the rumors Kevin Youkilis might go
Put on Yankee pinstripes? Does King think that, even he,
Could convey the horror felt by Red Sox' fans like me?

How Did I Live Before My Kindle?

I've been buying Kindle Singles, thanks to Stephen King;
It's because I am a fan who hates to miss a thing.
In Tall Grass or in The Crowd or at Mile 81...
'though my  Kindle isn't pink, it's still a lot of fun.

They are inexpensive. You don't have to be well-heeled
To discover Hell's address is Tropicana Field.
I thought I'd read everything but, at the author's site,
I discovered my assumption simply wasn't right.

Turns out there are stories that I'd never heard about
Scattered here and there in magazines which, I don't doubt,
Sold some extra copies with their rights to Stephen's work.
Can't believe I thought I'd read it all.  I'm such a jerk.

Amazon could sell them - as a single or a bunch -
Sales would top 10 million or I'll eat my hat for lunch.
Nothing like a scary story right before you sleep...
Stephen King has lots of fans and Kindle's books are cheap.

I am rather superstitious when it comes to sports;

Even without evidence that holds up in the courts,

I believe that sports gods lurk around the fields of play

Taking note of everything a Faithful fan might say.

Therefore, I've not said one word, at all, throughout the week

Out of fear that I would break the Red Sox' winning streak;

But, last night against the Rays - the score at 2 to 1

(Still without a peep from me) that lovely stretch was done.

Thank you for the ride sports gods; I like the winning kind...

Losing streaks cause local sports-talk guys to lose their mind.

They get nasty to their callers...  Maybe it's their jobs.

Baseball's just a game we play; they needn't be such snobs.

If you don't agree with them, they think you're pretty dumb.

(Tell them that you love them first; they may throw you a crumb.)

Wish they'd give the Sox a break because, from what I hear,

You should be encouraging when there are sports gods near.

In Which We Discover That Patience Is Not My Strongest Suit

Bought a book from Amazon; the latest Stephen King.
Waited, none too patiently, the mailman didn't bring
Us the book I'd purchased back at Christmas. Now I must
Go and buy another one...  You'll understand, I trust.

Think I'll buy the Kindle type, although it's $13 bucks.
Know the pictures aren't as good but that thing neatly tucks
Into any pocket and, for Stephen, that's quite rare.
Sure, you may have bought the book, but I just got a pair.

Not as crazy as it sounds. The first one is a gift.
Gave it to my sister so I'd have to wait my shift.
Patience, it's quite plain to see, is not my strongest suit.
Too late now to change my ways; an old and stubborn coot.

Thankfully, my ever loving husband, Mr. S.
Knows that fact about me and, apparently, cares less.
Oops, I have to go now... Won't be back until I'm done.
Mailman may be late, but Kindle's through downloading one.

Blogging - Sports vs. Politics

 

Turns out that the rhymes most viewed are those I've done on sports

(If I'm understanding what this Google site reports)

That's been true of other sites; well, really only one...

Back on Steve King's Message Board where I wrote rhymes for fun.

Started threads on government and one to say "Hello";

Started one on Red Sox and (from what the numbers show)

When it comes to politics, most people do not care.

Somehow I'd imagined that was just the case on there.

People go to Stephen's site to read about his books;

See what he's releasing next and find out how it looks.

Didn't want to blather on about this other stuff;

Figured that the Moderator'd surely had enough.

But the same has happened here as happened on his site.

People tend to skip the rhymes on politics I write.

That's okay; the Red Sox stuff is easier to do.

Happy to continue with them if it pleases you.
